air compressor air filter question?

i just got this old craftsman air compressor and it runs like a champ. but i noticed it does not have air filter. i couldnt seem to find one. or back then they didnt use one i take it? or is the intake port to close to the exhaust is that why. does anyone have one like this and made there own air filter or what are your suggestions

I'm thinking it had a filter pad that fit under the tabs?

Find some filter pads, cut them in the shape of the intake area and your done.
