Soon going to be installing my 2-stage, 60 gal. vertical air compressor in a closet under the stairs to the second floor of my new shop. The intent is to build a sound deadening space around the compressor and interior of the closet and a sound deadening intake labyrinth. The intended location will be to the right of the door in the closet under the stairs now under construction (sort of under where the extension ladder is standing):

I've seen several posts on GJ regarding sound deadening boxes for smaller compressors, but I'd like to see what others have done with a similar closet-type installation. Any suggestions .... or links to other GJ posts that may already address this question?

Mine's in a 7x11 room with a boiler, bikes, and some other stuff, but here's what I did:

2x6 walls
Caulk the studs before nailing the...
OSB on both the inside and outside of the walls.
Caulk the OSB before screwing on the...
Drywall over the OSB on both sides
In the wall vent I use for makeup air, I used a couple pieces of cow mat to make baffles.
Screwed cow mat strips onto the bottom of the french doors so they actually rub on the floor.

With the compressor on, I can't hear myself think in the room, but can easily hold a normal conversation in the garage with the compressor room door shut. With the garage door closed, the compressor can't be heard outside, at all.

umm.... not neccesarrily a voice of experience, but.... i am thinking it would be cheaper, easier to quiet the compressor down some? a muffer on the air intake, an oiled low rpm quality pump, a quiet electric motor. i'm thinking a quieter compressor in a regular closet/ compressor room should be quiet.

Basic box around mine and insulated with 1" sheet foam. It was decnt with the door closed but soon realized it was getting pretty hot in there if I kept the door shut with prolonged running. I put a thermometer in thier a few weeks ago and it got up to 138 degrees in there. YIKES!!!!! I added some fresh air vents in the top and door but now have higher noise. Hmmm, should have built the box out behind the shop....

How do you guys do the air intake for the compressor? Extend it to the outside of the box? Does the air compress ever over heat inside of the box?

Case study on quieting 5hp compressors, similar to yours it seems. A little "science" behind it.

Also, you may want to consider heat in that room, if, say you are sand blasting and it is going to be running all day. If you end up sealing off the room for noise, it's probably going to have minimal airflow. Compressors generate a surprising amount of heat.

Consider isolation pads for the floor, and buying a solberg style intake filter, or plumbing the intake outside.

It was a nice sunny day to work organizing the shop today. It's really nice being able to open the back roll up door to get some AM sun. Still have lots more to do.

I also got the Wifey area done, so I can coax her out to visit.

Hopefully the FIATs won't learn any bad habits from my Dad's B.
