Air Compressor Extended Warranties

Are extended warranties on air compressors a good decision? For me, I don’t usually buy them.

Some of the manufactory warranties are for two or three years, but it is normally for one year for all parts and labor, but the remaining year(s) do not include any wear parts, which is basically everything except the pump, tires and tank.

I only remember reading of a guy dealing w one on an IR, and there was something about the service provider requiring a credit card # up front in case it wasn't paid under warranty or didn't qualify they'd charge the consumer directly. IIRC they also charged something like $120 up front which was later refunded if it was paid under warranty.

Also this may not have been an *extended* warranty but merely standard manufacturer warranty, but I'm posting not because I like the sound of my own voice but because I think the story still applies here:

In that case the guy got a pre-paid Visa for the amount of the initial charge because giving them a blank check with one of his actual cards made him nervous, as it would me.

Mostly I've just always remembered that story as an example of a possible advantageous use of pre-paid cards when you maybe don't trust the merchant.

If it's a HF compressor, it's cheap insurance..and the exchange is hassle free. I bought one from there to put a new roof on a rental property i have in a kinda shady neighborhood about a year ago..didnt want to have my good one out there with the "locals"..sniffin around the truck while i was on the roof.. It got the job done, but had a hard time building pressure towards the end. I used the warranty to exchange it..took about 5min..no hassle..and sold the new one to my neighbor. He has been using it ever since with no problems.
