Air Compressor filter mystery

Hey everyone,

I've recently come into possession of an old Dayton Speedaire air compressor, installed in the family farm's shop / garage building. Not sure, but I think that this is a re-badged Champion R15 (or similar).

Anyhow, I'm noticing that the air filter is a different design than I've seen on other compressors. Looks like a canister, and mounts facing down (see photos). Having a hard time finding literature that mentions this type of compressor filter. I know next to nothing about compressor tech; can anybody tell me what type of filter this is? Should there be a finer filter inside?

I think that this unit was originally gas-powered, if that helps. The third photo shows the sleeve that the filter fits into (filter not installed in this photo).

Thanks!

Yes, its a champ and its what come on them. They are really a noise baffle as much as a real filter. Mine had some issue, don't recall now but put a small tractor air filter on it. The only place I have seen it a real issue though its auto body with paint and fine dust in the air.
