I'm looking to pick up a compressor for a blasting cabinet / spray booth of small parts.

I found a use / undated IR T30 80Gal 1ph 5HP for $600

No idea on the date, I have to go give it a look, but I'm weary of something with no history. It's being sold because "it's too big"

other than that, my budget is about 900.

Suggestions?

Use will be sporadic, not a full time thing by any means.

Thanks.

That size of compressor should do everything you need for sand basting small parts (even bigger ones), air tools, and painting. The price is nice given it's in good working condition. Those sell for $1700.oo at homedepot. I bought my OLD compressor many years ago and still love it. Sometimes age doesn't matter if the price is right.

A lot of times(unless you are spending big $$$) buying an older, used unit is preferable. Check the overall condition, ensure there has been no repairs to the tank, time it from 0-full to make sure it's putting out what it is supposed to. Ensure it has oil & doesn't have too much water in the tank. I'd offer $500 if all things check out.

When you get it home give it a good clean, check everything for leaks with soapy water, fix any you find, test all the pressure relief valves, check/adjust the belts, check/clean the air filter, let it run for awhile to warm up and change the oil with whatever Ingersoll Rand recommends

5HP is adequate for a hobby shop and if your cabinet ends up draining the air faster than the compressor can provide it you go down one size on the nozzle, that should fix it.

The cabinet needs 11-14.5 CFM

I will give this one a look, i'm concerned for longevity of it. It's one of the grey tanks, not the newer beige ones and not knowing the history, this could have been a hobby unit or undersized in a mechanics shop! I"ll give it a solid look though

you can get by with 10 CFM at 90 PSI with a cabinet and small nozzle. It's not ideal, and certainly not for hours a week, but I did for 10+ years.

I just bought the 60 gal one stage dewalt at tractor supply for less than 600. Does fine on my Eastwood cabinet. IIRC if you go a little north of 900 you can get an IR 80 gal two stage

I went with the 60 gal sine it fits well inside my garage. 80 gal is a whole lot bigger!

Nothing wrong with a used compressor. Mine is of unknown history, other than the tank and compressor are 60 years old when I bought it ~5 years ago. And mine is a 5 HP, 2 stage, 80 gallon, IR. Just look at it in person.
