My 24x28 motorcycle garage is not done, but it is enclosed. Eventually my 6.5hp air compressor will be moved in. Right now I plan to locate it in an insulated cabinet with the air compressor located high enough to have storage below it (jack stands, bottle jacks, etc). Anyone else done this and any suggestions?

I put my 5 hp 80 gallon upright up in the loft of my shop. I’m pretty happy with the decision.

the least noise will be on a concrete floor. if you put it up on a wood floor, I would think it would resonate and be louder.

LOL I wouldn’t have believed until I experienced. During a move and new house build I put my twin cylinder craftsman in a 12x16 shed I set up to get me through the build. Ran 240v to it and fired it up after a year of storage. It sounded like it was coming apart. Just figured it had given up the ghost after 50 years of faithful service. Moved it out onto the ground and did some chores, then decided to plug it in again to see if it would charge up. Purred like a kitten. Moved back into building while still running and it stayed smooth for a little bit then it started a wild dance and making not good sounds.

Turns out that it was resonating with the floor and I could stop it by placing a bag of sacrete next to it. I doubt it would be so dramatic on a shelf but I know it likes a solid floor.

When you say "insulated cabinet" What do you mean? Air compressors generate a lot of heat and need cooling air as well as air to pump. So don't build a tight closet that will hold in heat that is detrimental to your compressor.
