Air compressor inlet filter?

I have a single stage Campbell Hausfield 60 gal compressor, and would like to replace the inlet air filter with something better than the foam with plastic housing that came on it. The air inlet is approximately 3/4" in da, and has a mounting boss on each side of the inlet hole, with two mounting bolt holes, 1 3/8" on center. Is there anything available that I could use an inlet filter that's better than the foam/plastic one that's factory installed. The inlet also appears to be internally threaded, but I imagine screwing something into it would reduce the air flow somewhat. I couldn't find a brand name on the actual compressor. Thanks, John

If you take the factory inlet filter housing off, I think you will find it had 1/2 FPT threads. Simply buy a filter housing w/ 1/2 MPT threads.

Solberg makes filters commonly used on air compressors. They have them in various sizes and filter media.

Solberg is the right stuff.

Yes they are. More details in this thread. Also see this thread for discussion of compressor intakes.

I see the Solbergs with the 1/2" output are only rated for 10 CFM, isn't that a bit low?

Not for my purposes. See post #21 in the first thread I linked above:

They are Solberg FS-06-050. I bought mine at Grainger, and detailed specs are on the Solberg site. They're rated for 10 CFM each so total flow is 20CFM, which is almost 4 times the rated flow of the compressor of 5.5 CFM @ 90psi. No worries about strangling the pump. They are 1/2" NPT threads and they went right in.

I'd also refer you to this thread that discusses intake noise. That's what led me to use the two elbows between each filter and the pump head, and doing so reduced the impulse noise significantly.

Re: Air compressor inlet filter? Update

Ordered a Solberg FS-15-075 will attach it with a reducing bell fitting to the compressor. The filter is rated at 20 SCFM which is overkill for my compressor, but the next size down was right at the compressor rating. Got the filter at Amazon, which sourced it directly from Solberg, and is actually $5.00 less at Amazon than what Granger gets, according to their catalog.

My original filter on my craftsman compressor looks identical to the solberg. Does the solberg actually quiet it down enough to be worth 25 bucks?

I have the 25 gallon cman professional horizontal compressor.

You might also want to figure out how to add a muffler to your compressor's inlet. Yes, the inlet side - that's where a whole lot of the noise comes from. I used to have a really big compressor and the inlet was 1" pipe thread. I made an adapter out of short piece of 1" pipe with a 2" washer and then a pice of 2" tube. I bought a cheap short muffler with 2" in an out, then I bought a cone style air cleaner and put it on the open end. This does a good job of filtering the air and a very good job of getting noice out of the shop.
