Air compressor input needed

I am interested in purchasing an air compressor for use here at home. I'll be using it for rotating tires on our cars/trucks, and mechanical work on these same vehicles. A guy locally has a 120v Craftsman 3 hp, 25 gallon that produces 6.8 cfm at 90 psi. Will this be enough or do I need more?

Is it belt driven, direct drive, or oilless? Got a pic or item # (should start with 919)?

Looks like direct drive, those are kinda loud but for the money that isn't too bad. Old motor specs though, more like 1.5 HP maybe 5 cfm @ 90 psi. It will do everything but sand blast and paint large things.

Craftsman 919155732. I'm going to replace the trans in my 4x4 Blazer so I'll be removing exhaust crossover, both driveshafts, transfer case, crossmember, starter, flexplate to converter bolts, and of course ******. Will this compressor do ok? I was looking at a cordless 3/8 Milwaukee but I can buy this and a decent 3/8 ratchet with money left over and won't have to buy new batteries down the road.

What do you mean "more like 1.5 HP"? It says 3.5 HP on the compressor.

What is stamped on the side of a compressor in regards to HP and CFM are not always correct. Compressor companies like to use fuzzy math. To find out the actual HP you need to look at the amps the motor pulls....

Skip the 3/8 air ratchet. Loud and unwieldy. Get an earthquake 1/2" impact and 1/4" earthquake air ratchet with a swivel if you really want an air ratchet.

You'll want the power of the 1/2" IMO.

I don't know on the 3/8 air ratchet thing, I am very fond of my air ratchets and the noise don't bother me. I would prefer to use one on transmission removals....

Ranger Dale is right. What is stated horsepower wise is not always right. Craftsman is a very guilty party in borderline false advertising. They advertise a compressors peak, or starting HP and not it's running horsepower.

A single horsepower is 746 watts. A regular wall outlet has 120 volts & 15 amps. Watts = volts X amps. So a regular wall outlet has 1800 watts. This works out to roughly 2.2 horsepower @ 100 percent efficiency. Doesn't matter what any single compressor, motor, or what says, it's not going to be making more than 2.2 horsepower off a regular wall outlet, EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (The single exception is startup when for a brief moment they can be powered by a start capacitor)

The majority of my sockets are 3/8 drive including my Snappy swivel impacts so I'll probably get the 3/8 Earthquake (if they stock it in store).
