i have my air compressor inside of my garage but have thought many times of moving it outside because of noise and space but i notice lots of other people still have them inside. i did put it near roll up door so if i need air outside it is not as far to pull hose through the shop. what is your opinions?

In the garage, in the corner is where mine is. It is loud, but a good IR machine. I guess there are "air silencers" on the intake side that can help with noise. Outside would be nice, no doubt if you can. I have an air auto eject valve on the bottom that kicks the air out every few minutes when in use, so I have it close to a wall.

I also have mine in the corner right by the garage door. The noise does not bother me enough to want to put it outside exposed to the elements. But my compressor is oil lubricated & I don't have the option/room of putting it outside in a little shed.

Depends on the compressor I guess. I went from a small little plastic box with a foam insert to a large 6" dia Solber silencer. No reduction in noise whatsoever, not even a difference in sound. But my primary reason for the change was for ease of cleaning the filter & replacement cost/availability of the filter.

Looks like the OP has a oilless compressor, those are always loud, nothing really can be done to quite those down except for making an enclosure for it.

At my old place i didnt have a lot of room, just a small two car garage. I had a small garden shed ten feet away from the garage that i put my air compressor in. I trenched a two foot deep trench from the shed to the garage. I ran the air hose threw some pvc pipe. I had to run the hose threw as i put the pvc together it wouldnt feed threw if i did it later. Worked like a charm noise was outside and the compressor was protected by the elements except the cold in the winter. It did not start once or twice. I thought it froze up but when the temp went up it started up again.
In my new shop its going to be sitting in the corner until in cant stand the noise anymore then i am either going to add a room on to put it in or build a room inside the shop for it.

Outside - in our area, generally cooler and cleaner air for the sorts of work I usually do (it still has an air cleaner), quiet is nice.

The grand plan has an attached lean to type of shed that will house lots of things but I need to pour a 10x12 pad to build that. Currently is on a PT wood deck under a small roof mostly under the eve. I will put a phase converter and genset out there when all is said and done. I will also get all my yard stuff out of the shop.... thinking this might be a good summer to pour a pad now that I start typing this.

I don't have a good compressor "yet". But when I get one I have a plan to put it in the back corner of my basement shop. Then, I will build a little utility room in the corner and insulate for sound with air ventilation. There is a conduit that goes up to the "main shop" to run air and electric lines. When the whole shop if finally finished (some day), hopefully it won't be very loud upstairs.

But right now, in the basement with an oil-less compressor, it is load as all get out.
