I currently have my air compressor inside my garage. Just wondering where everyone else has their compressor located? I have thought about building another room outside my garage and have it large enough for extra storage plus it give me more space in the garage.

I have my 80 gal IMC in a small room off the back of my shop. I also use it for storage of other stuff my walls are insulated so with the compressor out there I can hardly hear it, so nice.

I did what you're thinking about doing. I added 12x18 enclosed lean to on an existing slab that was already poured against the back of the garage. Besides the compressor it houses my generator, lawn ****, and bulky stock.

My son has his split.
The pump sits under the "dead" corner of his work bench.
(With a small car muffler in the intake plumbing.)
The tank is in the rafters.
They were connected with truck air brake hose, but he jus changed over to a 3 inch pipe going up the wall with a drip leg at the bottom.
He never had much water when he drained the tank, but he thinks it will be easier to get to and he will do it more often.

I think he just wanted to do something with the pipe.
It is a 8 foot piece of 3 inch ridge elect. conduct.
He picked it up when he was scrapping out a store re-hab.

I have a big crawlspace under my kitchen/dining/office level that is just off the garage. Concrete floor, insulated, stays around 60-70 year round. I'm going to get one of those 30 gallon Eastwood scroll compressors (ultra quiet) when they come out and either put it down there, or in the utility room that is right next to it (so that I can access it easier and have it close to the floor drain). Will be a short run to the garage, and I can just drill through the rim joist to pipe the air into the garage.

Mines in a lean-to type closet outside my shop. Been in that little closet for 17 years with no problems.

I have two 80 gallon, approx. 20 cfm units in a back room built onto my shop. The room is insulated and drywalled, and has a walk door into the shop. Sound is not bad at all when the door is shut, but the room heats up quickly when either is running. I bought an 8" sidewall stove vent and plan to use it to pull some heat out of the room up high by wiring it in to run on a thermostat most likely. The compressed air will be dryer pulling the intake from inside, as I am also involved with two outside units at work. They squeeze out some water this time of year here in humid NC. 100% humidity some days.

Almost on topic, for those of you that have compressor inside and use a muffler on the intake, how much reduction in noise? Approximately. Like 10%, 1/2, can't hardly tell it pumping?
With a car type muffler do you want it to pull air in the same direction as it would if it was exhausting from engine?
Debating weather to go through the hassle to move compressor to unheated and powerless shed that is next to shop.

Used to keep the compressor in the basement laundry room plugged into dryer plug. Attached garage. But separate shop in the new place. Loved it there. Always warm could never hear it.
Family hated it. They could alway hear it!

I'm going to build a small insulated lean to with a fan for my primary one.

I built a little box for mine. It really drops the noise a ton and was built with left overs. It sits right next to my work bench.

**Video is really loud a few seconds in so drop the volume.**

I bought a 60 gallon compressor back in February and I still haven't hooked it up yet. My garage is attached to the house. I put the compressor in my utility/boiler room in the basement, which is on the opposite end of the house from the garage. I'm going to have to run the electrical and the air line for the compressor from the garage, through the finished basement, to the utility room. That's going to be a pain, but I think it'll be worth it when I'm done. The utility room is a clean, dry room that stays around 70 degrees year-round. I also won't have to hear the compressor running, and it won't take up valuable garage space (my garage is small and I need all the space I can get).

I currently have my compressor in the back corner of my shop. However, it is loud and I am looking to move it. I am thinking about building a "shed" outside off the back of the building to house it.

Not to completely hijack the thread but what requirements are there for this type of thing? Is freezing a true worry on the coastal side of the mountains in WA state? What about ventilation requirements? Will the heat that builds up without proper ventilation cause premature failure?

What issues have you guys ran into when building a compressor shed?

Google........ compressor muffler

There are a number of YouTube videos. Even the larger mufflers do not lower the noise that much. The mufflers do attenuate specific frequencies more then others. You still have the valve/motor/output noise.

Back in the late 80's we had a particularly cold winter, one of the machine shops near the parts store I worked at had their compressor behind their shop. One Friday the compressor was not shut off, the cut out switch froze which kept the pump running, when it finally had it's fill and exploded they found pieces of compressor and building several businesses away. I t was a very good thing it happened while they were closed!

All depends on how cold it gets, for how long and how much you use it during the cold months..

Bought a new 60 gallon compressor last year as a Christmas present to myself. Installed it in my unfinished basement and ran copper tubing to my garage. Installed an AC switch in the garage so I can turn the compressor on from there. Can't hardly hear it run in the garage plus this compressor is much quieter than my old one that sat under my work bench.

Our 80 gallon is in the far front corner of the shop it's fairly quiet my few mods with rubber feet between tank/floor, motor, and pump. Have dropped the noise to allow for conversion while standing next to the machine. I have plans to box in that area of the shop to reduce dust, paint, and noise, It's basically our compressor, electrical panel, and stock room. It would basically eliminate the noise that's left... or so I hope.
