Air Compressor Noise

I've got a Coleman Powermate upright 80 gallon, 6.5 HP air compressor. The last month or so it begun to make an odd sound. It's not a knocking or hammering sound to indicate serious internal issues, but more of a "gurgling" sound. The sound comes and goes as it's running. It sounds like it might be coming through the air cleaner. Any ideas?

This unit is probably 13 years old and has seen fairly light use. Other than an oil change every 3 or 4 years, I haven't done anything to it. I'd noticed the black, very course sponge filter is getting a bit crumbly. Hopefully it hasn't pulled this loose filter material into it. Is there any PM I could/should have been doing to this unit? Other than draining the moisture out of the tank often, it sounds like you are ok, but perhaps it's a good idea to take a look at the oil for possible water inclusion.

My hunch is that one of your stainless reed valves is starting to fail, and you are hearing air being blown back into the intake. The metal fatigues over time, cracks, and then completely breaks off.
