Shortly I'm going to need a good synthetic reciprocating compressor oil. I would like to have one oil to cover 20W and 30W temps 0° to 120°. Amsoil PCK seams be perfect for this but I have a hard time believing all there hype.

When i get around to it I will give the compressor shop a call for a recommendation to.

What brand oil do you guys like to use in you reciprocating compressors?

MOST manuals state not to use motor oil with detergent. I use straight 30wt in my 30 year old sears compressor.

30W non detergent motor oil. You could also pay a little more for the same stuff with "compressor oil" on the label.

You should probably mention what make/model compress you have. Certain makes/models require specific types/weights.

The owners manual that came with my compressor said to use "any synthetic 20W-50 oil". I had a bottle of Harley Davidson SYN3 sitting on the shelf so I put that in it. No issues!...

The OP specifically asked about synthetic oils; the Mobil Rarus 400 series are not synthetic. Mobil's synthetic compressor oils are in the 800 series.

As with most every company, you are wise to not believe ALL that the marketing dept publishes. However, that doesn't nullify that the AMSOIL compressor oils are good.

The original poster mentioned that he needed a good synthetic compressor oil, but the exact question was...

"What brand oil do you guys like to use in your reciprocating compressors?"

There ya go, just deconstruct the original question until your answer fits.

To clear this up. I'm interested in ALL types of compressor oil. But I'm planning on only using synthetic. Unless we get a huge agreement for a particular Conventional oil. I'm not seeing that at the moment.

I whose hopping to see a larger amount of people using one particular brand of Synthetic but even If you use Conventional oil I would like to here it but please state Synthetic or Conventional oil.

I have a IR T10 2hp portable air compressor. I bought it used and don't have an owners manual and cant seem to find one on line. Does anybody know how much oil I should use in the compressor? The unit is basically dry of oil so I can't gauge it by how much I take out. Thanks for any help you can provide.

If you have a Tractor Supply around, they sell 20wt non detergent by the gallon. Works on just about everything including the lawn mower. Not that I ever change the oil in the lawn mower, but it would work if I did...

Drain the water out of the tank too when changing the oil.I have seen what happens when the oil is not changed in an air compressor, damage to the piston.Draining the water out of the tank prevents rust out and will explode when the tank rusts out, this is no myth.

30wt non-detergent.

Tanks exploding is a myth in the fact that people make it sound like a common occurance. You sure dont see too many reports of exploding tanks and there are tons of old tanks still in service. I think one excuse was that its because its not news worthy. Will i disagree, when a 40-120gal tank at 150-200psi blows it makes for a very, very impressive site, 100% newsworthy.

But i digress, when a tank is failing from rusting 99% of the time what will happen is a pinhole leak will form and you'll hear a hiss. The hole will gradually get larger then finally it wont hold air, or some dolt will weld a patch over it.

The only reliable way to cause a tank to blow up is if you remove the pressure safety valves and let it pressurize well above its certification.
