I have never had an air compressor that requires oil before. I picked up a used one off of craigslist. I would like to change the oil in the compressor unit, and am wondering what kind of oil to use.

This question is asked a lot on here.
Try searching, although searching on here never works well for me I guess I don't know how to use it right.

Anyway I currently have a Champion 2-stage compressor and all I have ever run in Mobil Rarus 427air compressor oil in any reciprocating compressor I've had with no oil problems.

Check the manufacturers recommended oil viscosity and type. They do have different oils available and you should use the recommended oil.

I use Amsoil ISO 46 SAE 20 synthetic oil in my compressor as recommended by the manufacturer.

Go the the Amsoil website or manufacturers site for helpful information on compressor oil.

Also, now is the time to add some plumbing fitting to the oil drain port. Extend the drain port away from the cylinder head so when you change oil it is easy to do and cleaner. Sometime the oil drains onto the tank and make a mess if you are not careful. Doing this will make it easier for you to change oil.

Usually they recommend a sae30 non detergent oil. But My old one said 10w40 and my new one a synthetic sae40 compressor oil only.
