So I am refurbishing an older Champion compressor and on my way home, bought some Sherwin Williams DTM Acrylic paint. I wanted to buy enamel, but they said it should do everything I wanted it for. But as I read, acrylic shouldn't be put over oil based which I'm sure the compressor was painted with, and I want it to be durable over some areas that won't get prepped except for a cleaning.

Should I ditch the acrylic and buy their Sherwin Williams urethane Alkyd enamel?

Just picked up a can of Urethane Alkyd enamel. Called the industrial store and they said the acrylic will just peel right off. I just want this done, and right the first time.

Even with the proper new paint top coat, always be sure to use a wax and grease remover, and slightly abrade the original paint to give the original some "tooth" for good adhesion when the new is properly applied. Any small amount of residual wax, grease or oil is the enemy of a good paint job.
