I think he is saying that used compressors in his area are junk. I went through the same thing. On the used market around here people think a worn out 30-40 year old compressor is still worth $1,200. Anything newer they’re asking list price.

I have two used 80 gallon compressors, in different buildings: an IR and a Champion.

While they both function, if I had a do-over, I would buy new, rather than used.

I didn’t pay that much for them, but now, after several years, I have two old air compressors that should be replaced anyway. If I bought new originally, they would have outlasted me.

The first years of any product are the best years.

I'm glad I bought my Eaton last summer when I did. It was $1937 a year ago, and is now $2472.

OTOH, there is no "coming down" anytime soon. If you need one, they won't be this cheap again for a long time.

I purchased a 60 gal 5 hp upright craftsman 15 years ago. Have never done anything to it, damn noisy but works great. I think I paid around 600 for it and if I ever need to overhaul the compressor the parts are about 50 bucks. Other than the racket it makes I can't complain. I probably would buy an IR if I replace it but as long as it's working why spend the money. If you can deal with the noise it's a great deal and the noise really isn't that bad, if I have it running I'm making plenty of noise anyway.

I was waiting for Home Depot to put the Emax model I wanted back on sale (online). They had discounts fairly frequently, but I looked around while I was waiting. Ended up finding a brand new one of the exact same model I was after that a local company bought for a manufacturing work cell that got cancelled. Saved about 1K over new.

I had the same attitude as you about buying used, but I was happy to have stumbled into the deal I found. Maybe keep on eye out while you are looking for a new one. Good luck!

Yep, consumer prices are skyrocketing these days. Many of the (brand new) lowest priced goods ($5 or less) in our area have gone up by ~ 100%. Consumer goods priced well above that run ~ 20-30% higher (as for houses, a 10-20% yearly increase is what some areas are seeing). At this time you'd better buy what you absolutely need now because prices don't look like they'll be dropping any time soon.

Quote: "Sure, but how many people (even on GJ) know enough to properly assess a used air compressor (or a used car, generator, house, etc)?" Sorry, but I respectfully disagree with you on this to a point. I say this because 'properly assessing' the above things that are brand new isn't always much more reliable. There's a lot of brand new "junk" out there from vehicles to houses. And no, you can not imo entirely trust buyer reviews due to the fact that many bad reviews are deleted by the retailers or sellers.

Just pulled up my 4 year old eaton invoice. Price went up 50 percent. Less then normal steel which around here is 100 percent and osb that is something like 400percent.
I'm delaying all purchases. This is crazy.

You're correct, it is crazy. But this is what happens at the tail end of any fiat currency when the debt becomes monetized and the printing machines are running 24/7.

You are incorrect in delaying all purchases. The proper thing to do during rampant inflation is to buy everything you can at today's prices, because tomorrow your dollars will be worth even less. I know this is a hard concept to accept, but it's our current reality. Prices won't come down because what is really happening is our dollar's purchasing power is shrinking. Same deal with housing prices.

Just my $.19 (adjusted for inflation ;)

4 years ago I was looking at new 17-22 CFM compressors. $1800-2200 now they are 2800ish.
Buddy bought a fixer-upper house and as it is getting completed, he was approved for a large garage. He just told me his build quotes for the garage are More than the house. No end in sight for the reasons posted earlier.
Shop around real hard and buy the best you can afford Now.

Anyway I recently bought a used Mutt compressor for $400. Quincy QT-5 pump 17CFM, Dayton 5HP high torque farm duty motor, Siemens mag starter and a Good condition 80gal Husky tank. Even with $300 into rebuild parts for motor and pump, I am $2000 ahead and have something I know how to repair, again, if needed.

I surely am not an economist and definitely do not understand the complex models. We have been told that its all been a supply and demand problem. I thought those were getting straightened out as everyone was balking at buying 50 dollar osb that we got for 15 bucks 2 years ago. I'm sure it will take longer to right the ship but if i don't need something i'm not going to go pay double for it. Even with inflation i can see buying materials at these costs will be beneficial for decades. If inflation takes off i agree with you but i'm not hearing it will jump.

Um, have you been to the grocery store lately?

Take some older tin food cans with you.

Now compare to the current size of a soup can, for example. Then go measure how deep (thick) the breakfast cereal boxes are.

Inflation has already taken off! Research what happens at the end of a reserve, fiat currency. We are there. This is nothing new, it has happened over and over again over the centuries. People never learn from history, as history has shown.

Anyone wanting a decent use air compressor in so FL, PM me, my friend owns a repair shop. I bought a used refurbished Saylor-Beall 705 from him, and he has all sorts of use equipment he sells. I disagree w/the O.P's blanket statement: "...everything used is junk."

I'll put you in-contact with the small business owner.

Coincidentally, I was taking my terrier for radiation treatment for mouth cancer, and whose tradesman truck is at the vet clinic, but my friend, the air compressor business-owner? I checked-in my l'il fellah, and called him. He said, "business is crazy, I've never been busier. Service is busy, new sales is busy, it's crazy." He services three counties of ~5,000 sq mi. & ~7 million population here in so. FL.

I popped for a floor model recently, paid like $490 for a single stage 60 gallon. Not the best air compressor (Dewalt), but it will handle anything I do. I also picked up a reconditioned Hitachi pancake "the tank" for track days ($99.99). I'm cheap, so if I have to buy new, I'm always looking for open box, demo, floor model, and reconditioned units.
