Air Compressor Question regarding air flow

Something weird is going on with my compressor lately. I mainly use it to blow dust off my cars. I have the trigger type attachment on it which has a thin metal tube which pushes out the air when you squeeze the trigger.

My Comp/tank is on all the time, so it's always full.


What happens is this. When i first squeeze the trigger, the air comes out like gangbusters, but after about 2 seconds, the air pressure decreases substantially. If i just keep squeezing it in and out like pulsing it...it seems to be OK.

Has anyone ever heard of or experienced this? Any ideas what might be causing this?

If you have good pressure in the tank, start tracing back to the tank and find out where your blockage or slowdown is. Basic troubleshooting will tell you where the problem is. There is a good chance the problem is at the regulator.

It sounds like a blockage at the tank. If you just have a hose from the tank the hose will pressurize and expand some. That pressurized air in the line is giving you the initial burst of air and then it is being throttled by a restriction at the tank or somewhere in the piping system if you have a plumbed system.

Severe restriction at the compressor or beginning of the hose. Could be the inside of the hose itself, right at the beginning. As noted, the hose is storing air, that is the blast you get, then the restriction prevents more air from quickly reaching the nozzle. You close the nozzle, the hose refills.

Eliminate the hose, remove it and plug the blow nozzle right into the quick coupling at the compressor, wall, where ever the hose was plugged in. If it blows good, bad hose.

it's the regulator. Remove it and connect the hose directly to the tank. Still have the problem?

I've had a blow gun where the internal o-ring under the trigger dislodge when using it and partially block the air. Metal guns can usually be taken apart and fixed.

Had a blow gun did the same thing and the problem was the blow tip itself. Try another blow gun and see what happens.

WOW. thank you all for the suggestions. I didn't know what that thing was called, but now that i know it is a blow gun...I can shop for a new one. Any recommendations on who makes the best one? The one I have came with the compressor, so it must be ****.

SHEESH! So many to choose from. I want one that will really move some air. I am mostly blowing out debris from the garage floors and dusting off the cars.

Looks like Silvent is the one to beat. Just need to figure out which model I need, and then find someone that sells them near me.
