Air Compressor Question

I did a search but didnt see a thread on my question. I picked up an almost new cheapo Job Smart air compressor (26 Gallon upright) for $80 that I plan on using at the house garage (buying a 2 stage for the shop now that I am getting electricity there) but the air pressure drops to about 40 psi after a couple days and I dont know if this is normal.

It airs up to about 120 psi no problem and I can use it normally but once I am though for the day I close the valve to the airline and unplug it and in a couple days its down to 40psi and just stays there. I cant hear any air leaking out but the pressure drop seems a bit high.

The only compressors I have had before was an ancient pancake unit and portable 12v units and figured you guys would know if that kind of leak down is normal or if I need to be looking for a leak somewhere.

Arm yourself with a spray bottle and a soap and water solution. That will

be all you need to find the leak. Depending on how big the leak is, how

much you use the compressor, and if you, like I do, leave the compressor

run all the time so air is immediately available, can determine for yourself

if it is worth trying to repair the leak(s) or just use it as is.

the leak isn't a big leak really. when you're checking don't forget to check the check valve .

Thanks guys, its a cheapo Chinese compressor but it works great and for the house garage use it will be all I need. I'll check those valves again and use the soapy water to see if I can figure out where its leaking.

It must be leaking somewhere.. can you mention the brand and model number of the unit? For example some air compressors (by many users units by CAT are poorly made and leaking) so you may want to go for another brand.. if you have extra cash you definitely should go for porter-cable or makita as repairing the one you own doesn't make a lot of sense.... there are also cheap air compressors you can buy for under $100 if you are using your air compressor only for inflating tires etc.

Windex works good for leak checking. Runs off kinda fast but makes bubbles easily.

If you don't find anything externally, as someone mentioned, the check valve at the line into the tank from the pump needs to be checked. Pull the large line off and spray down the valve and see if it is leaking back into the pump.

I have a cheap Coleman oil free compressor in the basement - it's regulator leaks constantly. Yours might have the same problem. I've tried fixing it but I don't think it's worth the time.
