Air Compressor Question

I have an older 80 Gallon 5HP single stage compressor and while it's not an end of the world problem it a frustration one. It leaks down about 20 pounds per day. I have checked every fitting including the drain on the bottom, the exit on the side, both lines coming out of the (head both ends). is it possible that air is escaping internally in the compressor? I don't know where to look for this leak. I used Snoop brand leak detector and did not find it. Any help truely appreciated.

Pump-to-tank check valves are notorious for bleeding air back into the compressor.

If the unloader is at the pressure switch, those valves leak a lot too.

yup, take off the line to the tank ( leave the check valve) and soap that up and see. also the pressure switch could be leaking around the bottom where the diaphragm is

Often, simply tightening the screws will stop the leak.

thanks for adding that. I have had them leak and a tighten of the screws usually fix it ( they are probably inside the housing and could be tamper resistant )

Instead of soap it can also be checked by snapping a simple balloon over the end of the line. If the check is leaking then the balloon will inflate....

A finger from a single-use glove would be easier to find in most shops.

To All responders thank you it was indeed the tank valve. Man, that thing was crusty. When I used the Snoop leak finder the bubbles rose up like a head on a beer and filled the port. I'm in the process of getting a replacement. Thanks again.
