i have a craftsman 26 gal. upright air compressor. basic oil-less type.
my question is, would it be a bad idea to mount it somewhere up high on the wall but put it sideways? the compressor motor would be laying on the right or left side depending on how i laid it. hope this makes sense. thanks for the info!

I would think the oil would leak pass the rings on the piston? I think that is why you are supposed to let refrigerators and window A/C units sit before you turn them on for the first time, so any oil in the top can run down into the bottom. But I am not an expert.

I would double check that the bottom end is indeed oil-free, terrible things like 'hydraulicing' can happen when oil seeps past a ring.

another thing to consider is that you would have to move your condensate drain bung.
