air compressor questions

Hey guys, I'm a 17 years old that bought his first car over the Summer and fell in love working on car since then, in order to work faster I've recently bought a 5hp 20gallom compressor that gives out 7.3scfm at 90psi, I was wondering if anyone can help me with understanding how it works

So on the compressor itself has a regulator to adjust the amount that the tool will use, but I've seen people used a separated regulator that connects to the tool like a spray gun, now how does this work ? Do you just have 2 regulator in the same system and choose which one to use , and if you want to use the separated one , do you turn the built in regulator all the way to to the max and use the separated one to adjust ?

Another thing is I think in the future I'd like to plasti dip or paint my car ,and I think my compressor is not enough and I've seen on several threads that you can hook up 2 compressor together , how do you do this, what tools would you need?

A compressed air system often consists of a main line, and then a few branch lines. Pressure is regulated from high towards low. The compressor regulator will control the psi of the entire system, usually from 100 to 120 psi, but some people chose to go a bit higher. (The compressor regulator is usually adjustable for the psi that the compressor comes on and when the compressor shuts off). Any downstream regulator, for the branch lines that have them, would be set lower. They would control all downstream pressure on a part of the system.
It is OK to have more than one compressor feeding a single system but I don't think its the best practise. The discharge of each goes into the main line. Set the compressor regulators a bit different from each other so they do not both come on at the same time. If you are consistently using a lot of air, much better practice is to get a single, larger compressor.

Thanks for the answer , so if I want to use a separated relugalator I can just set the built in regulator at around 100-120 psi and use the separated one right?

And does anyone know how to connect 2 air compressor?

You can run compressors in tandem ,very simple plumbing but why would you unless you want to do some serious sandblasting or air sanders? 7cfm will not keep up, there will be plenty of short breaks allowing air to build up..
I only regulate air at tool on my HVLP gun otherwise I set pressure at compressor.
Someone will post just how to run two compressors. I forget if I was using one ways valves. The end result was the two compressors still could not provide volume of air I required but I carried on and sandblasted the whole vehicle,,every panel , nut and bolt, frame, wheel....

yeah im just wondering just in case... also i know this might sounds like a dumb question but when you are setting the regulator do you set it when running the tool (pressing the trigger) or when it's not running ? because i saw that if i set my regulator to 90 and press my impact wrench , the regulator gauge would drop to about 70-75 ?

You can connect two compressors if they have similar pressure ratings. You can add their CFM ratings for more power. I have worked in plants that have 4 or more compressors connected together.

Set your regulators during no flow. You will see a slight dip in pressure when actually using air. Feel free to fine tune the regulator if the needle doesn't come back to your desired pressure. If the dip in pressure is too much and affecting performance of your impact wrench you have one or more restrictions. Could be the regulator itself, pipe or hose size, length of hose, or quick-connect fittings.
