Air Compressor Questions

Was wondering if you guys/gals might try and answer a few questions for me?

Picked up a older free Campbell Hausfeld WL651401 air compressor last week and finally took a look at it today.

Compressor pump itself works fine.

Replaced cord, had problem.

Regulator does not seem to be shutting off pump. No worries there, I'll just put a new one on it. (if I don't tear it open and try to fix it)

What I am wondering is, the copper exhaust tube had a chunk missing out of it. Appears it was from over pressurising but I am not sure.

I know the regulator does not work but the PRV, pressure relief pop-off valve should have prevented that serious of a blow-out.

I can tell you that the copper tube gets way freaking hot. Much more than my I-Rand. Will burn you to touch it.

What do you guys/gals think is going on here?

So, the "regulator" you mention is actually the pressure switch. that controls the start/stop of the motor. the regulator just adjusts the pressure after it is made so to speak.
not sure what you mean by a chunk missing...do you mean it's split?
air heats as it gets compressed. the more getting compressed, the higher it gets compressed, the more heat you will get. I'd say nothing to worry about

Single stage compressor output can get well over 300f. I doubt the tube split due to pressure, that would take way more than the pump would produce.

Sorry guys... I'm sorry I did not make that info more clear.

What I meant was:

1. The compressor does not (or at least did not in what I thought was a reasonable time) shut off.

2. By chunk I meant, that a piece of the copper tubing was completely gone. About 1/4" x 2.25". Like it had just been blown out. It was not there. No bends on either of the 4 sides, just gone with sharp edges NOT facing inwards or outwards.

You know what I mean? Like hammering a nail through a piece of sheet metal. One side pushed in and one pushed out. This was not like that.

Sorry guys... too many projects and not enough time.

Here are two images of the exhaust pipe that busted. Still very curious as to what may have caused this.

it looks to me like the pipe was fractured in the bending process. a weak spot that blew
sure is strange
