I need to replace the magnetic starter on my wayne air compressor. Are all mag starters the same? Will any one work with any air compressor. I want to buy a used one off of ebay for my wayne air compressor. Its a really big motor but it says only 3 hp. It is 1ph 240v. It's a late 1960's model and is two stage and i think its an 80gal tank. Will a SIEMENS 14DUC32BA be good for this application? I want to bid on it on ebay but i dont know if its the right one. It looks like any old mag starter, but i just want to be sure. My air compressor is just an any old air compressor, their is nothing special about it. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You have to have a mag starter that the specs match the min. of what your electric motor is.
You motor is 3hp single phase 240volt you didn't say what the motor amperage draw is in your post it will be on the motor nameplate you have to match that as well it is okay if starter amperage is more but not less than the electric motor itself.
This starter will do single phase as well 110/240v but does not match your motor hp rating.
Remember the higher the voltage the less amperage it takes to run the same motor.
A 240v single phase motor draws more amperage than a 3 phase motor will at 240v.

Starters come in different HP ratings...

Open yours up and take a look, you can probably get a replacement contactor from Grainger.

My motor draws 16.6 amps at 220v. But does that amperage specification mean 110v or 220v?

If it is 110v capable then it would list it like:

32 / 16 Amps

Otherwise the amperage is for the voltage on the plate.

Sorry I worded my response poorly. Thats how the motor lists it, but how does the magnetic starter list it. It just says in the specs for the starter that are posted above that the starter can do 27 amps. Is that number for 110v or 220v? If its for 220v then im good, but if its for 110, then its underrated and not suitible for my application. However in the specs it just says 27 amps, no indication as to weather that is in 110 or 220.

Those specs are for a 3-phase contactor. You are needing a single-phase model. That one would not be large enough anyhow.

That contactor listed above is both single phase or 3 phase it clearly shows that it can be used either way the ebay auction picture shows the wiring diagram on the door of the mag starter box the amperage/hp rating is not high enough for your motor though.

At 240v this stater has a max motor hp rating of 2 your motor is 3 hp it will not handle the load that your motor will put on it.
That is why it is only at $30.00 because it is useless to most people if you had a 3 phase motor than this starter will handle up to 5hp.
