Hello fellow garage journal folk,i haven't been around for a while, been busy turning wrenches in the shop. Kind of been reading, but a stranger to posting.

Anyhow, i have a Craftsman 4 gallon 2 hp pancake oil-free compressor. It hardly keeps up with the list of air tools to follow, just so you all know i use air tools heavily often, such as a 1/2 inch and 3/8 inch drive air impact gun,3/8 inch drive air ratchet, air chisel, tire inflation tools, different types of blow guns and other various air tools in different drive sizes.

The difficulty is,i am trying to convince my mother that i need a larger air compressor, i am looking at a home depot, husky pro grade cast iron, 3.2 running horsepower oil-lubricated pump that runs at 240 volts, with a 60 gallon tank @ 135 psi max air pressure that puts out 11.5 scfm @ 40 psi and 10.2 scfm @ 90 psi.

Mind you,i am aware that a box store air compressor probally isn't the best, but it has a 3 year guarantee, and i will invest in a extended warranty as well. I'm on a tight upgrade budget of $500 for the air compressor alone, minus the hard copper air line drops i am going to run, and this compressor fits within the budget. I will provide a link via personal message if anyone is interested in knowing all the specs,as i don't know if it's allowed to post http links on this forum.

The other problem, is i am handy with pretty much everything,so how much will be involved in running a hardwire 240 volt power line from my circuit breaker panel to the air compressor, after attatching it to a disconnect switch at the compressor to lock it out, If it's going to be too difficult,i will hire my electrician friend.

Sorry to make such a long post, thanks for any advice you fine folks can give.

before you jump on the hd compressor, search your local craiglists for used compressors. ive looked at that compressor and it just doesnt seem worth it to me

look into the Chicago Pneumatic air compressors. they are real pump and motor compressors that come as small as 2hp 20gal, pretty inexpensive too. your best bet is to stay away from the direct drive husky compressors they just dont last very long

As far as the wiring, the most difficult part is actually running the wire (especially inside walls) and possibly finding a new circuit if your load center doesn't have any extra spaces.

See if you can find any specialty air compressor shops - particularly ones that sell parts and do repairs. You might want to investigate that route before pulling the trigger. They often have good used ones. If you are set on new you can wheel and deal in these places often times especially if you have cash in hand.In southern California there are several and with $500 I could get a very respectable setup if I wanted to play them against each other.

In all honesty I would be VERY hesitant to buy anything new branded Huskey these days. Home Depot has just taken a good name and exploited it.
