air compressor valve washer, no washer?

Cleaned this thing up more, there was a lot more original paint under all that rust and dirt. Trying to get rid of leaks. I opened up this valve and saw no washer in there, is there supposed to be a washer there? If so, what kind of washer is supposed to go in there? I'm also thinking it might be a metal to metal seal but I thought it not likely, but maybe.

OK, nevermind, I finally found that it's a type of gate valve. Never seen one like that, I've seen the kind with the "sliding door" though.

That is a globe valve. Gates are best used as shutoffs, Globes are better as throttles.
