Air Compressor will not go past 30psi...

Just bought a used Campbell Hausfeld compressor.

5HP 60G 220V Single Phase...

Hooked it up to my Generator "to get 220V" Garage is not wired for it yet.

Compressor motor spins fine and pump pumps fine till approx 30psi then motor seems to labor a bit and stops. Pump still rotates smoothly. If I cycle the on/off switch the flywheel will turn a bit but again the motor stalls?

Any ideas on this situation?

Check to ensure that you have the right motor for your compressor.

I just recently got a Campbell-Hausfeld 20 Gallon Compressor in some used tools I bought, only to find that some RHODES SCHOLAR changed the 5hp Oil Free motor with a 2hp Jenny Oil model.

Suffice it to say, RHODES SCHOLAR hooked up everything wrong and mine would not go above 30 PSI.

Also, you may want to check your Capacitors, You should have two... One for start and one for run...

Ensure there are absolutely no air leaks...

Ensure your unloader is not leaking air...If it is not, I would recommend you check your capacitors...

BTW what is your Model Number?

I dont think a leak would create this problem? Its only running 2 to 3 minutes before the motor starts to slow then stops.

As far as checking the caps on top of the motor, what would I look for?

try turning the regulator up....could have a bad gauge also, put an air tool on it and see what it does

Thats odd, the schematic show 1 Cap hump. My motor has two.

Motor is a:
Magnetek part# 173 719-22

Again it all looks original and is in good physical condition...

No, I was running it off of a Generator 20A 220V.

This is what I am hoping "the generator cannot handle the load when the compressor starts to build pressure"? But I am thinking the Generator is plenty big enough at 5K watts.

I am suspecting that you are having electrical issues.... Perhaps your generator...

Could this compressor have been designed for use in an another country?

You need to find a clamp on amp probe and see how many amps it's pulling. Is the generator lugging down when the compressor starts lugging?

Sounds like you're not getting enough current to the compressor motor. You said the generator can put out 5000 watts...meanwhile the compressor is rated at 5hp= 3730 end watts, which in reality is probably something more like 1.5 times that in final draw. Entropy is a *****. I'd check the wiring between the compressor and the generator first and make sure that there is good contact. 2nd I cut out the nig-rig stuff and wire the compressor up to a known 220v-20A circuit before making decisions. Seriously, right now, we don't know whether it's the comp or the generator. NOBODY can honestly answer this question.

take a voltmeter and hook up to pressure switch where power come in.
if your voltage drops way down as your psi gose up check gen.
replace run cap.
It could be marginal so motor runs fine till you start loading it down.
someone could have replace cap with the wrong size.
you would get the same thing.

Well, got my subpanel wired "thanks to info on this site".

Wired up the compressor to a 30A breaker flipped the switch and it came to life. So it looks like something was up with the generator, either way the compressor works fine and pumped up numerous times to 130 and back on at approx 85 so I am happy.

So now I have to finish up the subpanel and kiss the extension cords goodbye.
