I have the 5 HP version of that compressor, it's probably a little older. When (not IF) the teflon rings in it finally go, it will be replaced with an open drive oil lubed unit.

I've read that the loud noise occurs at the air intake, if true, they make mufflers for that reason. You might try fabricating one from a motorcycle muffler, and it might make the difference.

That won't make much of any difference on an oiless. The piston speed is the root cause of the noise...

Sell it on Craiglist and buy an oiled compressor from Craigslist.

^ ^ ^ ^ This. You'll never regret selling that screaming oil-less compressor.

A vertical tank (30 to 60 gallon) and oil-splash compressor that is belt driven will be oh so much quieter and likely a lifelong compressor.

That crapsman oil-less can be someone else's problem when it dies !! :D

I use to have a 30g oiless till it finally died years ago. Bought a 60g oiled and got way more air with 1/5 the noise. Oiled pumps will make a fair amount of noise without the correct filter. Oiless make noise no matter what.

Once my oiless pancake dies I won't buy another, hate the noise in a customer's home.

I had this same compressor for years. Rebuilt it 2 times, mainly because it could be done for less than $30. There is no crankcase, on mine, it was just open. Crazy loud. However, I'd still be using it had the wife not bought me a 80 gallon IR, and it is the berries, much less noise, builds air faster, less floor space loss, sounds like it maybe time for an upgrade for you.

I had similar unit. When it pooched I replaced with a 60 gallon 5hp RK compressor. Same noise just a decibel less,,still loud and annoying as heck. A smaller unit like what you show in picture could be relocated to attic of garage.

I had the same model. Very reliable for 20 years. I put it in the basement and and ran a copper line to my attached garage. Wife was OK with the noise (stuff was getting done), but the cat would freak out and run any time he saw me walking towards the Sears compressor. Motor finally shorted out and I bought the big Sanborn form Menards.

(2) 50' air hoses
(1) 100' extension cord

Push compressor 100' away from work area. Run lines.

I have a similar oil less compressor. I want a 220v unit, but don't have the electrical in this garage to support. I put up with the noise hoping it lasts until I buy a new house w/ a larger garage.

I forgot how loud oiless compressors are, my dad is over working on our downstairs bathroom, has his twin tank porter cable in the basement. It kicked on last night, woke me up in the bedroom on the second floor, lol.

Just remember oiled compressors are loud as **** too. My little cman 2 gallon is oiled and its loud. My buddy bought the 21 gallon HF oiled and it too will run you out. A Solberg would help his compressor. Just putting a hand over one of the intake holes made it less of a high pitched loud noise. Still loud , but not shrill. Just goes to show what a properly designed intake silencer could do.

Sell it on Craigslist, then goto HF, and buy one of their 29gal ones for under $400. its 1.\ a much better compressor than you've got and will run everthing... 2.\ Takes not much more room, when you consider the floor footprint. 3.\ its a LOT more quiet than what other compressors are like.

It's not so much an oiled vs oilless thing, but direct drive that makes it loud. Oiled direct drive is still loud, but they aren't as loud as oilless.

A belt drive, oiled compressor is going to be the quiet answer.

QuietER - plenty of belt-driven oiled compressors are still extremely loud. Pump speed, pump construction (aluminum vs. cast iron), and air intake design all have a significant impact on the noise level.

I worked in one shop with an IR T30 (cast iron) 2-stage compressor that was spinning at over 1K rpm and it was hard to work in that bay with the compressor running.

The Harbor Freight 60-gallon oiled compressors are also very loud as they have aluminum pumps with high pump speeds.

This helped a lot for me, but it's still loud.
