Air Compressors: Reed vs. Disc valves

How big of a difference is there in regards to maintenance? I have narrowed my decision down to 2 different Champion models. The first is a 7.5 hp model with a r15 pump. This model has disc valves and the pump turns at just below 1000 rpms. The second is also a 7.5 hp unit, but has an r30 pump with reed valves. The r30 pump only spins at 575 rpm. This is for my garage shop and I want something that will likely last forever. There's not much on the used market here and I have been watching for months. I really like the low rpm r30 pump, but have heard that reed valves can give you more trouble. Noise is really a concern due to where it will be placed. Thanks!

For a home garage, I think those two machines will probably outlive you; they are industrial-duty.

The advantage of the disc valves is that you can take them out and clean them up without needing a gasket job.

Thanks for the reply strutaeng. I figured both would outlive me, but was really curious if I would ever notice a difference between the reed and disc valves. I only plan to run the compressor about 10-20 hours a week on average, but you never know. I do really like the idea of the larger pump running at only 575 rpm's versus the smaller pump ramped up to nearly 1000. Both will have an automatic drain and aftercooler, so the only real difference is whether I would rather have a slower pump or disc valves. How much of a noise reduction would the slower 575 rpm pump produce?

I would go for the lower RPM unit too, less wear & tear overall...

Disc valves are neater, but for home use they are probably overkill. Plus, buying a couple gaskets for your head might set you back... $20 ???

Just be sure to use non-detergent oil and keep your air filters clean and you won't have all the crud build up on your valves....
