You know what's really funny reading thru that, is I have the same (similar) compressor from Sears. He keeps making jobs about how smart he was when he bought his, and how the "new" compressors these days have much lower output (he quotes I believe 7.5 cfm @ 90 psi for his, mine is 5.8 cfm @ 90 psi). What actually happened is a whole bunch of manufacturers/stores lost a lawsuit and had to start advertising the actual running CFM, so that is why all the ratings dropped (I saw a my previous compressor rated much higher). But anyway, glad to see he has had good luck with that compressor, I hope mine holds up just as well, although I think my pump is Chinese made and his was US made :(. What can you do.

I hardwired a home made 30ft cord for my compressor and the materials were only $40 for the wire and plug using 10/3.

what's 10/3? i assume its the wire gauge but i only hear people talk about 10, 12 gauge wires... what does the /3 mean?

thanks

The 3 is for how many wires. I've heard it called 10/2 also, I guess some don't count the ground. The stuff I bought isn't Romex, it looks just like a normal power cord in 10gauge.

Not exactly,
The 10 or 12 or 14 is the wire gauge size.
The 2 or 3 is the quantity of shielded/covered wires in the casing.
w/ground- not a shielded/covered wire in the casing.

Re: Air Compressors Update

Okay Fellas I have been real busy with things in general the last little while since I first posted this thread, but I may be making progress, may......

I found a used Campbell Hausfeld air compressor for sale. Now my American friends please realize that you just can't compare prices here to the prices you fellas get down south,so ypou will have to take this into account.

Campbell Hausfeld 26 gallon cast iron made in USA air compressor
Serious Duty label
15 amp 120 volt
6.5 cfm @ 40 psi
5.7 cfm @ 90 psi
125 max pressure
This unit has not been used very much at all.Took about 5 minutes roughly to fill the tank to max pressure.
Seemed to hold pressure AOKAY
Now when he opened the drain at the bottom the water that came out was rusty coloured.Does this mean the tank has seroius problems?

Price new is in Canada in my area $550.00 and 14% tax

This unit I'm looking at $325.00
Your thoughts please
Thanks

The pump sounds fine, I have a 25 gal @ 150 psi and it takes 4.5 mins to pump up. So I think you are OK in that department. Next, the rust coming out. Not a big deal, or probably isn't. My brand new from the factory compressor will blow out a little rust colored water every time I drain it. I think most of the rust is from the actual drain valve, as mine was pretty well rusted even after 2 years.

No idea on the price to be honest, seems high but I know everything up there is. You'd just have to compare to what else is up there to get an idea if it's reasonable or not.

Larry,
Does it look like this guy?
SD530391.jpg

SD530393.jpg

That's 5 feet of copper between the pump and tank (my mod)
And I changed the pressure/regulator switch (nothing wrong with the old one (read my sig)):)
If so it's sweet.

Hey Fellas
I'm thinking surely there must be someone on here that has this model of used compressor I'm looking at.It is very similar to the new one that CH sells but is not an Extreme Duty and only has a single cylinder.
Many Thanks

Okay fellas you must be getting tired of my questions as I'm not getting much attention to my posts.I guess I'm the type of guy that needs a lot of attention, BooHoo poor me,LOL.
Seriously though, I bought the above mentioned compressor and have it home.Ended up getting it a little cheaper than the asking price. As I'm just acquiring information on compressors I understand that the copper tubing from the pump to the tank can get quite on when running.I see pictures of other compressors and they seem to have some sort of finned tubing,is this to dissipate heat quicker than a normal piece of tubing? Can you do this for any compressor to up grade it a bit>
Thanks in Advance!

Hmmmmmm!!
Not trying to be a whiner or anything but I feel somewhat of a black sheep as answers or chatter on this thread of mine has just about died, but here goes again and feel free to comment on any of the above stuff I have posted. And really I'm not looking for attention! I'm really new to this whole air compressor thing so I have lot's of questions and want to go about things the right way.
#1 I'm going to change the oil in the compressor just in case somethings not kosher with the stuff that's in it.

#2 What type of air hose is a good all around brand, composition etc. ?

3# Should I put some sort of filter or anything else after the air regulator and before the air reaches the tool?

#4 I will be using the compressor occasionally not every day, so Do I drain the tank after using? Do I do this while there is air built up in the tank?

Many Thanks

If I answer this will you be a good boy and be quiet?? :D

1) Change the oil to what CH says your compressor should have.

2) Goodyear 3/8" rubber hose.

3) I run a filter at each drop but then again, I'm stupid...

4) If you use it a lot in a day, drain at the end of the day. If you don't use it much, drain once a week.

You do not count the ground. 10/2 is a 10 ga wire that has two conductors plus a ground. 10/3 is 10 gauge what has 3 conductors plus a ground.

If you only have a 240 load you can use 2 conductors, if it is 240 and 120 load, then 3 conductors.

10 gauge is good for 30 amps.

Lots of drama over the choice of a compressor. The good thing is, if you buy and you find it doesn't suit your needs, you can sell it with out losing much of what you spent.
