I’m finally having central ac installed in my house. For heat I have a hot water boiler. So they will be installing ductwork for the ac.

The inside unit is called a air handler I’m reading. Since there won’t be a burner /heat source in this, what do they call this? Should it be shorter in heigth since it has no burner to it. What do I google to see pics of such a unit. Tks.

I would have them put in a heat pump system with no aux heat. It will likely be more efficient for you to run the heat pump til your outside temps hit 42°F or so.

This will also shorten your indoor unit (air handling unit), where you don't have an external, add-on cooling coil. You will have an outdoor unit (condensing unit), refrigerant piping and indoor unit (air handler).

The contractor should be able to install a thermostat or controller to lockout the heat pump below 40°F outside temp.

The contractor, which I know well, is making the outside unit a heat pump and explained the efficiency over my boiler down to a certain temperature. The air handler in my basement will cool the first floor and in my third floor attic will be a high volume, mini duct unit to cool the second floor bedrooms. So I’ll have two separate thermostats for my ac. Heat pump will serve both units.

Was just wondering about what size my basement air handler will be.

You are correct -- air handler. It would be called a furnace if it had a gas or oil heat source. An air handler and a furnace are basically the same size. Some manufactures make air handlers and use the same case as they do for furnaces -- others sell a blower module and the cased coil for the outside condenser goes on top.

A furnace w/ AC with have this same cased coil on top and be larger than just an air handler.

depending on the boiler and the type of radiation -- cooper baseboard/ radiators/ radiant floor. The HP can be a nice way to take the edge off of a cold house in the morning. I used my HP's that way with my house that's all radiant.
