I need to flush the air conditioning lines on my car. I am looking for suggestions as to what to buy for a flushing tool, and any other information that might be helpful.
thanks

Re: Air Conditioning flusing

If you're flushing the lines be real careful with the solvent you use. Wear protective clothing and maybe a respirator. In the old days you had a pressurized can full of some nasty solvent that you would shoot through the hoses. Wherever it went, it went. Now days many flush machines are closed loop systems so you breathe the **** and the solvent is collected. Those are pretty pricey though. The MSDS for the solvent will make you think twice about using it.

Re: Air Conditioning flusing

flushed my wifes van last year with some canned ac flush from autozone. and i wouldnt do it again, at least not on a minivan with cramped quarters where its hard to control solvent flow. that flush is nasty and not worth it to me to expose myself to it. yes i wore good mask, coveralls, glovess, but in retrospect why take a chance.. i promise you there are way more fun ways to risk shortening your life.

I say dont think about flush unless you know for sure you need a flush. then bite the bullet and pay a professional. if you do it anyway make sure you rig up something on other end of li e to keep the solvent you push thru contained. a rubber hose into a pile of rags keeps the aerosolized spray contained.. but must be cleaned up to avoid spontaneous combustion.

I guess that I should have mentioned that this is on my 1962 Chevrolet Corvair. The system has been open for about 10 years now. I started to restore the car, and then had heart surgery, and the project got pushed to the back burner. I am in the process of starting over with this car, and I will be replacing the rubber lines, after I flush out the copper lines. The evaporator and condenser will also need to be flushed, and I will be installing a new expansion valve, and a rebuilt receiver drier. I am hoping that the compressor is still good, but if not, then I will have that rebuilt also. Right now, I am just getting started, and want to get everything lined up, so when it all comes together, I will have everything that I need.
thanks, and I am hoping that someone here has experience with the flushing tools. I do like the idea of the rubbing alcohol. Classic Air in Tampa suggest that I use lacquer thinner.

I use lacquer thinner when I do it. Found a great high volume air gun via a YouTube video to blow air through to dry it up.

Take your car to the local Trade School and ask if they need a practice car for flushing coolant systems.
After they practice flushing it 10 times it is bound to be clean. Just a thought.

Do you remember the name of the high volume air gun?

I've seen it done with a Sure Shot and denatured alcohol, but I use the flush in the can from the auto parts store, because I do not yet own a Sure Shot.

I have a Sure Shot canister, but have never used it. Picked it up for a couple of bucks at a swap meet. I think that I will give that a try.. thanks
