Can anyone recommend a universal air coupler (female/female) that is press to connect. Seems the one I keep finding at HD and Lowes don't press in easily or are almost impossible to release.

Prevost Safety Coupler. More expensive but well worth it. I use the truflate style, also called automotive style. They release with a push of the button.

Milton Type V style couplers.made in the USA, have high flow, and are compatible with the standard industrial type from horror fright and HD. (The Milton female will accept an industrial male, not the other way around)

The type v's I bought recently are not made in USA. The back of the package says made in Taiwan. Kinda disappointing.

As mentioned before, Prevost. I sold them and Milton to many body shops. Miltons were good, Prevost were better. Whats nice about the Prevost is you can rebuild the coupler. They are a bit expensive, if I remember right, about $10-15 a coupler. They will last a long time and will be durable. Run them over with a dump truck over and over again and they will still hold up.

Coilhose makes a decent universal that also has an air dump feature, only issue is it will need a whip on the tool to prevent side loading the coupler which causes premature failure. I'll echo what the others have said, Prevost makes very nice couplers, not only do they release with the press of a button but they dump the air while holding the male adapter captive until you release the button. We are getting ready to put their product on the shelf and will have a pressurized (regulated down of course) display where people can check them out.

Another vote for Prevost. I have been using mine for years in my home garage with no issue.
