i've got a std 4-1/2" angle grinder i use the heck out of w/ cut-off wheels, flap discs, etc. i also have an air cut off tool w/ 3" wheels that i never seem to use. is there some advantage to one/other, besides whichever one is chucked up and ready to go?

at home, most of my grinding, sanding and cutting is done with electric powered tools.

every place i've ever worked at has an ample amount of air,
so air tools rule the shop.

over the past 4 or 5 years, cordless 3/8" dr impacts are catching on.

I use my electric angle grinder with a cut off wheel when there is lots of room and the air cut off tool in tight places.

I always have the air hose reel handy so the air cut off is my go to for a lot of stuff, I hate extension cords so I only use the grinder when it is already set up or i'm next to one of the many outlets.

For a lot of years I couldn't live without my air cutoff tool.

Now I can't remember what the heck I used to use it for.

I think the air powered on being lighter and a little smaller is better for more precise cutting in cramped spaces (like floor pans). I think the discs are slightly thinner also. I would use mine a lot more but it's a HF junk and has no balls to cut through steel. I mainly use it for fiberglass.

I recently got a plasma cutter and reduced the grinder/cutoff wheel use dramatically.

I use air if I have to but the nice thing about electric tools is after extended use my hands aren't cold.

If I am cutting it's usually air, grinding is electric 4inch. My die grinder doesn't have the power to turn a grinding wheel well enough but it does everything else just fine so it is a better solution to have the elec grinder then spend a boat load on a high end grinder that may be better or may not.
