air die grinders

The straight die grinder at work died and looking to replace it. It was a ingersoll 308 or something I think. Been reading up here on them, and Unless we spent lots for the top dotco or dynabrade is there much difference between the cheaper ones?

I was wanting a CP but not sure what models, They won't want to spend a lot so if there's a cheapish one that works good for low-med usage that would do the trick for us.

It's pretty easy to rebuild those. New vanes and bearings usually fix the problem.

The cheaper ones hold up pretty well in my experience. Fastenal sells Rock River and Jonesway and both are pretty solid for $70-80. I much prefer the angled over a straight but is just my opinion.

I have a 20 year old "bulldog" die grinder, was $20, thought it would last a few years and still works excellent...maybe I got the pig in the poke.

I didn't even know Dynabrade make die grinders but after looking at the price I'm sure they are made in Taiwan. Looks to me like a lot of import die grinders are made in the same factory.

So the old one actually isnt a IR. The one my coworker brought in is a old IR and works good still.
I'm think the astro onyx will likely be our best bet. From reading up on most of these, there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between the cheaper range die grinders. I think amazon has some deals on astro right now too

Dynabrade is USA and also has an imported line. I think the imported is red and US is blue. I have several by them and they are USA. and $$$. They better outlast me

Seems like all the cheap ones I've used have excessive rpms and vibrations.

I have had good luck with Florida Pneumatic die drinders lots of torque.

FP used to make Matco die grinders have one that is 40 years old and still runs great.

I have one of these plus many others and the Onyx is nice and powerful, quiet and body stays steady temperature as in doesn't get cold on your hand.

Funny- I’ve been using St. Louis Pneumatic for years, but just bought a new die grinder and roloc disc die grinder last week. You can buy most of their most popular models through Home Depot. Some of the more industrial-oriented products need to be bought off of their website. Good stuff.

Earthquake from Harbor Freight would be my go to as their air tools are very powerful and work excellent. Also Walmart is closing out the Campbell Hausfeld line I have some of their air tools and they work good professionally too I’m actually thinking of picking up one of theirs.

Picked up a Sioux through the ebay deals section here, and it proves how well they should work. It will tear apart a 3" cutoff wheel overloaded without slowing at all, versus the HF and Carlyle grinders I have that just bog down regularly.
