In order to provide a bug free environment in my garages, I've installed screen doors over one door on each and use fans to pull air in and exhaust it back outdoors. My detached garage has a whole house fan venting into the attic - the most powerful fan I have. It does a decent job considering that I can open multiple windows in addition to the big 5X6 screened opening. In the attached garage, I have a fan mounted in the window and it's pulling air through screens over a standard 7X9 opening.
Problem is - at least on the attached garage - between pulling the air in and then blowing it back out through another screen the flow isn't exactly optimal. If I have the fan set to exhaust - I can stand in front of it outside and feel the air but it's underwhelming. If I pull the half screen up above the fan though - the airflow doubles at the very least. And no, I don't really want to walk around the house to open it and then close it every time I use the fan. I'm lazy that way.
I'm using just the standard fiberglass screening material - not the insect specific screening - from the big box stores. I'd like to have a screen that's less restrictive but also keeps the bugs out since I often run that fan in intake mode also. I understand that those may be mutually exclusive goals - but I'm willing to let a few of the smaller bugs in as long as it keeps the mosquitoes out.
I've done some Google searches but I'm not really seeing anything. I'm assuming at this point that the cheap screen I'm using is probably the best at airflow but maybe one of you have been through this before and found something better.
It's worth a shot.
