Air hammer/chisel bits?

Any suggestions on "must have" bits for an air hammer/chisel? I just picked up a Snap On PH3050, and need to add a few more bits to the tool box. I have a few of the standard bits, and a Powerbuilt 648597 pickle fork setup for front ends, but what else should I add?

Any brands that are typically "softer" than others, or any in particular to avoid?

With use like cutting bolt heads off they all distort/deform. I've settled on using <whatever I can find> and planning on replacing them often. I recently tried my first HF--like $5 for four--and am shocked at how well they worked. They live a hard life.

I have found that with that air hammer.......snap on bits are going to be the only ones that will take hard use. I have some grey pnuematic, that do okay, but that hammer is a beast and when the going gets to be more than a few blips of the hammer.......I get a broken bit.

A hammer bit, a round punch bit, a rivet cutter, an inside tailpipe cutter, and a bit with a 3/8 square and a hex, useful for breaking loose rusted fasteners. Extra long punch and chisels are sometimes handy.

Sioux make some good bits, but not their "Force" brand.

A hammer bit, a round punch bit, a rivet cutter, an inside tailpipe cutter, and a bit with a 3/8 square and a hex, useful for breaking loose rusted fasteners. Extra long punch and chisels are sometimes handy.

I use the 1/2" to knock wheel bearings and ball joints off the spindle. I've broken two so far, and a short hammer bit.

Ajax and old forge make bits that will hold up to the ph3050. Long hammer head and that 3/8 square are usefull. Lisle u-joint tool works most of the time.

Thanks for the info. I've been looking at the Ajax bits on eBay, and they run about half the price of the Snap On stuff.

I would suggest more snapon. Lifetime warrenty. We tear them up faster than they can order them. They all tear up. Atleast once a week snap on brings you more

Are the bits interchangable between air hammer brands?

And, does anyone have an opinion on the Air Hammer I purchased?

Bits are universal as long as they are .401 shank, which is like 90% of what you would commonly find.

I am sure if you do not even know about air hammers that IR will do all that you need it to do. Once you get to know what they can do, then maybe you will need to upgrade, but most IR stuff is pretty good in general.

Here's my novice opinion. I'm new to air tools and air hammers. I have this same IR hammer. I've used it to buzz loose some rear brake drums and rotors from their hubs using a hammer bit. This past weekend, I used it to chop rivets off of upper ball joints on a Dodge SUV, it was just fine for this. I also tried to hammer out some lower ball joints with it, but no, it's more buzzy than punchy. And these were large ball jionts. And maybe it wasn't the tool for the job, but at that point, I was stuck and losing patience.

I'm happy with it. Maybe someday I'll get one with real power, but it's a good place to start, and a good price!

(Once i got the adapter bit lined up right, the OTC giant C-clamp ball joint tool did the ball joint job just fine.)

Like said, Ajax and Old Forge are good. I have them plus a **** ton of SO.

I had to, man. Seemed like the most logical thing to do at the time. But I did buy some Ti while I was there for a blackbird project.
