Air hammer conundrum..

Good evening ladies and gents. I recently have come into a pair of Snap On PH2050 air hammers. The 2 I have were cheap because they were broke. One has a busted trigger and the other has air leaking past the barrel portion.

these were in a box at an estate sale today and the lady running the check out didn't want anything to do with the tools so she said "4 bucks".

One came with a Snap On quick change chuck that works fine. I figured it would be worth it just for that.


So.. I don't have a decent air hammer, other than the basic problems I noted, it seems a waste just to have these things as paperweights.

I tinkered with them today and they definitely are broken. I removed the barrels and cleaned out tons of old gummy oil. No luck. The cases are a little beat up, but no visible cracks or chunks missing.

My question is, does Snap On still repair air tools on a flat rate? I seem to recall that they did, but searching the threads I haven't seen anything about it in some time.

I'm not a pro tech, so I don't need a 300-400 dollar Astro/CP/SO /IR hammer, but it's nice to have one. I'm not too concerned about turn around time.

I had a ph3050 repaired this year and I believe the flat rate is $117.00.

FWIW I bought a long barrel Mac AH750 for $35 shipped off eBay and a short barrel Mac AH-412B with case and bits for $53 shipped off eBay. Both are used, but work perfectly. My point is I have two awesome air hammers for less that what you'll pay to have one fixed and if I'm not mistaken, the AH750 is more powerful than the PH2050. Don't spend the money to have them fixed if they cost that much.

Yeah I've been checking the Fleabay now I have these. I will check the Snap On prices for a re build, if it's even feasible due to the age or if I have 2 fancy door stops.

For just a little more than the cost of a rebuild, you could just buy a more powerful PH3050 off of ebay.

If the quick change chuck is working, worth it for that alone. Beyond an o ring or two I wouldn't invest anything into them. Used industrial brand air hammer are so cheap, don't get stuck on the name.

Do this, i had an old 1/2 impact from SO, driver sold me another one as parts for $20, put together a real good working one. If it breaks after that worry about sending it out or replacing it.

The 2050 is a good air hammer. I have 2, they have never let me down. They are worth making a good one from the pair.

Repair depends on if parts are still available. PH3050 is the current model. You'll need to call and ask. If they can rebuild its $97 including shipping both ways. They'll send you a UPS shipping label and send it back in a week or two.

Normally clean EVERYTHING inside up, get rid of all the oil too and put back together getting the barrel TIGHT and they work. I just put a very nice 7X rivet gun back together and it works great. Just blew air when I got it.

Quick change Chuck works, so for my 4 dollar investment I was a happy camper from that. Not hung up on the name, but I'd like to have one working just for laughs. I may get another used hammer off of Fleabay just to stock up.

Thanks for the replies, I spoke to Snap on , gave the serial numbers and I got a quote for 116.00 for a re-build. I should be getting a UPS label in the old email soon.

I may tear the other unit down for grins, but I really think for me this will work out fine. I sure won't ever wear it out again.

I told them I would like to do that, so they're sending me a UPS label.

I'm going to send one in for repair, if I get some more bucks in the tool fund I will get the other re habbed. They cost me 4 bucks at an estate sale so I figure that I will have enough air hammers to last me the rest of my life!

I didn't get pics but pulled the barrel off of one with the functioning trigger. O rings are shot, and those barrels are tighter than hell!

I poked around last night and I think I will be good with these. I think if I have one running, I will never wear it out. Thankfully I live in the south now and cars and tools are hobbies for me.

The thing about the Atlas Copco is they are rivet guns. They have a lot more control to hammer things out. Just make sure you get like a 4x

Hi all, sorry it took so long to report back. I sent my junker air hammer to Snap On Aug 8 and got it back on the 11th. Funny thing is that they didn't send back the one they sent me. I'm guessing they assembled on out parts as the serial number on the handle is not the same.

My first impressions are good, tool works flawlessly. Total bill was 116.00 (117 if you add in the dollar I paid for the tool and Chuck).

Will a rebuild work for everyone? I don't know, but I'm Damn impressed with the prompt service and the results.
