OK,I have a medium duty Husky air hammer. For my purposes it does a good job.My question is, I have noticed other makes and models do not have an external spring. Is there an difference between the internal spring and external in performance and reliability, and safety? Thanks Ken.

I believe the spring you're referring to is the bit retention spring. This is what holds the bit in the hammer. Some models don't have the spring, instead using a "quick change" chuck. It works just like an air hose coupler. Makes bit changes fast and easy.

General wisdom is proper usage of an air hammer is to not use it unless the bit is in it and pressed against the work.
