Saw the blue point version of this one on TikTok seems to break loose rust bolts really good. Some comment says HF have a version $40. Anyone used it?

Wonder how effective these things are on rusty bolts.

They actually work quite well. I was surprised. I have the Mac version, which I think is the same as the Mayhew ones. They shake and rattle the fastener enough that with a wrench on the driver it can begin to move, especially with a little Kroil or PB Blaster to vibrate into the connection. I bought them about 7 or so years ago for working on heavy equipment, mainly large RV's and they have worked as advertised.

I was trying to remove some riveted ball joints from a control arm and bought that chief brand air hammer from HF. Many years ago I had that cheap $20 air hammer and sucked. This is one is better and I think I'm going find good uses for it. I'm just DIYer and recently started getting more into mechanic work.

So those adapters are just for breaking bolts loose, right? Then switch to an impact and zip them out? Do you recommend an impact socket? I guess if it can fit in there?

Edit: @zmotorsports answered my question.

They will end up with destroyed drive ends from the adapter smashing into them if used all the time, or with the air hammer wide open. I have a HF set plus a specific wrench just for getting beat up by this tool. Once or twice, you can use you regular impact sockets.

I have Mayhew in 401 shank, astro for my 498 air hammers. Let me tell you, the long barrel Thor air hammer and one of those tools is a real treat to have in the box. My #1 use is the pinch bolt for subaru ball joints. I guard the axle with an old license plate, heat the threaded section cherry red, and bust them free.

The beauty is you can apply vibration without the twist. For instance on that subaru example, you could just blast it with an impact, and you'd snap the bolt right in half. The bolt would shear from the rotational force before you could apply enough impacting to free it up.

There was a thread on this. The US made shake n breaks sold by Harbor are in fact Mayhews. I have the actual Mayhews. It with a Snap-On P3 bit socket, and a good air hammer, and compressor obviously, are the greatest thing for rotor screws. As I replied in the other thread, Harbor said they will be rebranding the Mayhew dominator/big stick pry bar, that's the one I'm really waiting for.

I have an SK 1/2" drive which I'm positive is rebranded. I got it off steals and deal page for not much money. The only time I have used it is when I need to remove rusty exhaust manifold bolts. 8.3 Cummins exhaust bolts are notorious for breaking off.

The rattler works perfect for that and I would recommend it to anyone working on rusty bolts. The only exhaust bolt I broke on my 8.3 Cummins was the one bolt I didn't use the rattler on. Lesson learned.

Errrr….. are these things interchangeable between different air hammers or they are specific to a particular brand?

Standard air hammers are .401, granted I'm using a long blow Snap-on, there is an IR version and God knows how many clones. I don't have a big nasty or have done research into the equivalents which are .498", it would not not surprise me if there is a version for those.

I have one...have only tried it once or twice, but doesn't work as well as heat does at getting stubborn things free.

Just get an adapter for 401 to 498. The annealing really works. You have to anneal the adapter before you use it.
