Air hammer spring/retainer sizes

I ordered a spring advertised as working with 0.498 shank guns for my CP717 zip, but the diameter of the threads is too small to screw onto it (it does fit my standard sized 0.401 gun, however). I told him he may have shipped me the wrong size, so he sent out another one which ended up being exactly the same as the 1st. Do 0.498 shank guns have larger sized threads than the 0.401's for the spring or is my gun atypical?

It won't expand and thread on? Its only a wound up spring. Who cares what it looks like as long as it holds the bits in.

No, the difference in size is too great for the spring to expand that much.

I'd say email Chicago Pneumatic and ask them if you can purchase a replacement spring from them. Or get a part number at least.

Just to finish this thread up, I called CP today and they said the thread diameter on the 0.498 guns are indeed larger than the 0.401's and that any spring listed as 0.498 should fit the cp717. Looks like the guy sent me the wrong one twice.

I have one of those for my standard sized hammer, but I don't particularly like it because it cuts down on the length of the chisel making it harder to get into tight spaces.

You should pass this info along to the person who sold you the spring. This way they will know for future sales.

Yea, I did. Not sure if he believes me, tho, as he said he compared the second one he sent out against a 0.401 and confirmed it was "larger." How much larger might be the question. I told him the springs he sent fit my standard 0.401 gun, though not quite as snug as the ones I personally use. Perhaps he just assumed what he had was a 0.498 because it was a tick mark or two above the 0.401 his caliper. Who knows.
