I've found myself needing an air hammer more and more lately, or i just have a tool buying problem. I keep seeing long barrel And short barrel. Which is more useful? And what do you prefer?

Long Barrel typically has more power behind it. Short barrel are nice fitting into tighter spaces. I use a Mac short barrel and it honestly has not let me down except maybe twice. Only time I can think of is trying to get a hub assemble out of an older Dodge Ram. And even then it took quiet a bit a work to get it out with a long barrel Snap On. One thing you will also want to look into is a quick release. Makes a world of difference when switching between bits and also gives you something else to hold on to when using the air hammer.

There are two air hammers .401 shank CP 714 and .498 shanks CP717, everything else are noise makers.

While I would never call those cp air hammers bad by any means but the 714 does not hit like the snap on 3050. The 714 is my second favorite air hammer.

The PH 3050 runs around 300. Do you think there was that much difference?

there was a very noticable difference, but like i say for the type of work i do the 3050 is more than capable of doing it. and there is no way that i could ever get my moneys worth out of the IR, but it was sure a fun expirience.

I don't use air hammers, but I do use their cousin, the air riveter (I have the Cleco 4X and I really like it).

Long barrel = harder hitting, slower cycle rate
Short barrel = lighter hitting, faster cycle rate

I bought a used IR AVC13A1 (for $16) which is the riveter version of the IR 132. The AVC13A1 cost the same as the 132. This thing has so much power. I don't have the SO PH3050, so I can't compare the two, but that AVC13A1 is a monster.

So long barrel with the quick release is the way to go. You guys seem to like the 3050 from what i see around here but I'm not sure I want to spend $350 bucks on the 3050. Time to hunt a little more.

My dealer gave me the 3050 for 300 and gave me the quick release free, it is an additional 63 or so.

I've been happy with my Mac AH2010 Long Barrel. Powerful, featherable trigger, and comfortable grip. 200 bucks, but it only comes with a spring clip. Quick Change sold seperately.

I have the CP 717. The .498" shank, 25% greater cross section than the .401", has to improve application force significantly. Now I'm not saying it's gonna be worth the 450-600 bills price tag--for any given individual--but it was worth it to me. I haven't come across a ball joint rivet it wouldn't drive out yet.

I kept my old CP 715, bought 20 years ago for around $75. It's fun using both guns to replace Jeep Cherokee ball joints where you have to drive out the upper & the lower simultaneously.
