In yalls experience, is there something close to a CP717 that's a bit cheaper?
That's good to know, thanks for the info.Put in a saved search and find a used CP717 on Ebay.
The Astro 4980 is nice, but the trigger is on/off and not variable like the CP717. Makes a big difference when working on hardened materials like cylinder pins. The AP will just smash and bounce off while the CP can get the pin to start moving feathering the trigger.
Watched my shop manager's CP717 come out every time the Snap-on 3050s in the shop couldn't move something. I bought the Astro 4980 and while it is plenty powerful, the controls made it only useful for full power work, and a pain on stuck cylinder pins (which is 90% of the time we're pulling air hammers out). I'm sure it would've been just fine in an automotive setting.
I waited and bought a $150 used CP717 (and almost every .498 bit Ajax makes) and have since sold my Snap-on 3050 and the Astro. Zero complaints.
And no, the trigger control mechanisms can't be swapped over, I checked them out and tried.
I hear good things about the chief from hf. Worth a YouTube search anyway
