High flow couplings like Milton's "V" type have about the same orifice size in 1/4 as standard 3/8. As to your question though it will depend on whether your hose and tool are made to accept 3/8 npt. If you have to add adapters to 1/4 npt to make it work your probably not going to gain much.

The threads appear the same as the 1/4 couplers and they seem to screw in exactly like the 1/4 couplers

Then they are not 3/8. The fractional dimension is the threaded part and you cannot thread 3/8 onto or into 1/4 or vice versa. Most small pneumatic tools are manufactured with 1/4 NPT and most hose outside industrial applications will have 1/4 NPT ends.

They do help a bit but how much is speculation and according to gun size. The first pic isn't correct but despite the plugs being 1/4 thread the ID is bigger than the typical automotive. I use them and where its noticed is on 3/4 gun.

Larger guns are threaded to accept the larger 3/8"npt fittings. Other not so. If you use less restrictive fittings or even better, less fittings from your compressor to your gun, you should see some improvement. The Milton "v" seems to have a following on here. Personally I use oetiker ARO swing couplers. They offer unrestricted flow and were given to me. You may have a hard time finding them...
