I just bought a hose reel from Tractor Supply, which weighs over 34 lbs and has 75’ hose. Would this be too heavy (live load) to hang from a pole barn ceiling truss ceiling?

I would hope not. But, how you fasten it to the trusses could cause problems.

The bottom chord of the truss is in tension or compression usually, depending on the truss design. Rather than drilling or lagging into them...put a couple 2x4s on the top across a couple of the trusses...and then a couple on the bottom and sandwich them with bolts around the cords. Then lag your reel into the two bottom 2x4s of the new work.

Trusses are designed to move the load out to the walls usually, not messing with them is a good way to avoid potential issues.

I failed to mention I have scissor trusses with a white metal ceiling. The trusses are 4’OC and bridging across may not look to good.
Use Unistrut painted white to bridge across, if its painted well once its up it will disappear into the ceiling.
