Is there a general guideline or formula for determining the number of reels you might need in a given area?

I have a 40X40 shop area that would be used for general usage. Ceilings are 10'. The reels would not be the only access to air as I would have outlets along at least one wall.

I might be tempted to drag a hose around for a bit until you find out where you really need it, one reel might do it, maybe a couple fixed drops in common used places.

one on each side of each work bay.....ideally

I have a 3 car garage so I have 2 placed between the 3 bays and that seems to work fine

I'm using 2 ceiling mounted reels right now in a 28x38, and it's been ok. Though I plan to install disconnects by the workbench, the back wall, and outside once I get around to permanently piping it all in one day..

I my old smaller garage I had 1 hanging centered in the ceiling. It reached everywhere fine, and got to all sides and under a car fine. But I was constantly banging the hose all over the car so I wouldn't do it again.

I prefer a reel between each bay, and one on each side wall. This gives an easy two hoses for each bay (rarely do you need more than two) and there's little chance of entangling the hoses.Make sure you have plenty of hose to get around, I like 30-50 feet, since you'd also want to go outside on occasions.

Generally I'm happy if I have enough hose to reach all corners of the building, ideally without going over or around a vehicle or other semi-permanent object.
So, if you start in one corner of a 50x50 building you'll need at least 75ft to reach all corners from one spot. Obviously the more hoses the shorter they will be.

I plan on one 50' reel at the front between the garage doors so I can reach the garage and the whole driveway and then the loose hose for wherever else I need air.

Thanks. This is exactly what I was looking for. I knew the original question was vague at best and simplistic, but I knew there would be folks here that would give me something to think about.
