So I busted a good 50' rubber air line about a foot from the end. Is it worth repairing? Do I need to spend lot in tools/dies/fittings to fix it or should I just toss it and replace?

Depending on the fitting they used you can probably just cut the hose off around it and shove it back in the hose and you'll be good to go. If it is a hose barb then you don't even really need a hose clamp/crimp fitting in it the barbs will hold it in place as long as the id of the hose is in good shape

We had a line blow on us at the shop last night. 3/8 ID hose, 160psi. No one was around when it popped, we were smoking out back and heard the pop and saw it go wild.

Hose clamps can be extremely dangerous in this situation. Make sure to wrap the clamp is a thick layer of tape to protect anyone/thing who could be in harms way if it comes loose.

A Standard hose barb will not hold without a clamp of some sort or a crimped ferrule. They make push-lok hose barbs that do not use a clamp and are identified by a plastic cup shaped washer on the barb where it meets the threaded end. The angle of the barbs allow it to grip special push-lok style hose.
