hi, just wondering if anyone has any air source heat pumps in a garage for heating it? is the £500 worth it?

does anyone have a air to water heat pump that heats some radiators in their shed?

I have a series of insulated sheds and would like to heat the up a little in the winter and I'm trying to work out the best method. any help appreciated

Air source "mini-split" heat pumps are become a popular way to heat and cool sheds/garages in the US. If you do NOT have natural gas on your property and the winter temps tend to be above -20C, they are much more cost effective than propane or electric resistance heat. With a "mini-split", the compressor is mounted outside and refrigerant tubes are run to the air handler(s) inside. Most of these will now handle 2-4 independent air handlers but there is a limit on the distance from the compressor to the air handler.

First, where are you located ? What is the coldest temps you get in you area ? What size are your sheds ? How far apart are your sheds ?

In the US, there is very little (if any) use of heat pumps to generate hot water for radiators, except maybe in commercial application. This is common in other parts of the world, just not the US. I don't know why.



I think a mini-split heat pump, capable of generating heat efficiently, down to -20C, will cost a lot more than £500, installed !

OP needs to go to the black menu bar at the top of the screen. Select "User CP" on the far left, Select the very top item in the LH menu, "Edit Your Details" and scroll down to the box for location and put something in there. It might be South Georgia, Ontario, Great Britain, Wales, whatever, but help us out some here.

Also need more info on how large this "series of sheds" is, total number, dimensions, amount of insulation, etc.

Hi, I live in the north of scotland. 4 sheds in total. All the sheds are connected together.

one is 5m x 10m H: 2.2m + peek and has 50m of polystyrene in the walls and 75mm of kingspan in the roof.

the other 5m x 3m x 2.2m (50mm of polystyrene in floor and walls and 75mm in celling)

the other 3m x 9m x 2m + peaked roof. stone walls with a slate roof. no insulation.

the other 3.5m x 4.5m x 2.2m 150mm of glass wool in celling and walls and 50mm of kingspan under concrete.

I just installed a 3 1/2 ton A/C heat unit in my 1400 sq ft shop. This is a conventional type. It does have a 10kw heat strip back up. So far so good. Its only been in a month.

I'm now thinking about a (kerosene) oil boiler running raidiators as oil is only 45pence per litre and each litre of oil has a heat output of 10.4KW/h with means each equivalent KW/h is 4 pence. So even if the boiler was only 50% efficient then it would still be a lot cheaper than electric. also oil heating radiators are quick to warm up and heat a space. i think this might be the cheapest solution. I can get a second hand boiler for £100 and hopefully a get a few old radiators cheap too. i have also been offered a 2nd hand oil tank so i think it might all work in well? what your experiences with oil. heat pumps are just to expensive for me
