Whatever brand of pneumatic oil I happen to have near me - 3 different brands in the shop at work and all seem to work just fine. I've used Marvel Mystery Oil at home when no tool oil around with no ill effects.

not sure if the bottle in my box is labeled "Craftsmen", "Matco", "Pittsburgh", or what...but i'm sure they're all bottled in the same factory and all work the same...

i use it somewhere near once a week on my IR 231 and MG325...along with some grease for the IR...and they both kick ***

MMO or Lucas, whichever is closest to where I am standing.

I have been known to use motor oil in a pinch.

Marvel's makes an air tool oil. I have never used MMO as air tool oil, but their oil intended for the purpose is nice. I have that and HF left, used up my Lucas. Don't notice much difference in general performance, but when I most recently cleaned out a new HF tool (forget what) the Marvel's oil did it well and fast.

Don't think the brand matters that much, PROVIDED it's proper air tool oil, which generally needs to be a little thinner than most other oils you might have around!

Here in the U.K. most oil wholesalers sell their 'own brand' oils in any quantity from about a gallon upwards, and the range usually includes an 'air tool' oil of about SAE 10!

I usually keep cans of SAE 10, which I use for air tools, hand tools, or anything that you would use something like 3 in 1 for, and SAE 30 which is about right for most machines!

These, and a gallon of WD-40 do about 90% of anything I want lubricate or protect!

smells great .

nice n thin to not make stuff real thick .

used in some air tools since new and over 4-5 years later tore down the tool and like new inside . and the shop I was in had lots of moisture and junk in lines . :wtf:

I have seen guys use to much reg air tool oil and gumb up a air tool to the point he tossed it out thinking it was bad. I grabbed it and a can of brake cleaner . then filled it up and blew it out few times with the brake cleaner in a trash can . then lubed it up with the blaster product and gave it back . he couldn't belive it . I told him to much is also as bad as none at all.

One of my boiler customers, is a cutting oil/grease/lubricant manufacturer, they make grease for NASA. I bought a 5 gallon pail of their synthetic air tool oil about 5 years ago, and have enough left for the rest of my life time.

I got a qt of MMO with my first tool. Used that until it was gone.

Switched to ATF at that point, about 10 years ago, and haven't

had any hic-cups out of the fleet of tools I've got and use since

then. BTW: ATF is highly detergent, which is a good thing.

I'd like to know the real difference between ATF and "Air-tool-oil"

b/c I'll bet there isn't very much difference, if any, at all.

ATF is not air tool oil. Air tool oil is designed to both lubricate and clean and it has solvents in it to do so. I order the stuff at an industrial level at the plant and. Will take some pictures and give you the lowdown tomorrow.

I have used air tool oil, ATF and sometimes just a light oil.

the main thing is it needs a little lube and to get rid of the moisture in the air lines, is what I think.
my question, (not properly asked), is what is air tool oil, and what makes it better than other oils?

Air tool oil is a cleaner, lubricant and desiccant all in one. It is not just oil.

If you are using ATF or MMO you are taking your chances and shortening the tools life. Would not be surprised if over years of heavy use in an industrial environment that they would gum up and crop out. We have 10 year old cheap I die grinders that get oiled once a week and get used 24 hours a day, 6 days a week.

Note how nasty the oil looks as it comes out of the exhaust, that is the solvent doing it's job and getting the **** out of there. Adding grease can be important too and most food air tools have zerks for specially designed air tool grease dispensers.

We have a hundred die grinders through the plant so we have learned most of this stuff the hard way.

When I say MMO, I am referring to the air tool version. However, consider this:

Marvel Mystery Air Tool Oil is:

70% - 80% Naphthenic Hydrocarbons (Mineral Oil)
20% - 30% Mineral Spirits
0% - 1% Chlorinated Hydrocarbons (Ortho-Dichlorobenzene)

Regular Marvel Mystery Oil is:

70% - 80% Naphthenic Hydrocarbons (Mineral Oil)
20% - 30% Mineral Spirits
0% - 1% Chlorinated Hydrocarbons (Ortho-Dichlorobenzene)

Surprise! It's the same.

Mineral Oil lubes. Mineral Spirits cleans. Ortho-Dichlorobenzene cleans carbon deposits.

Let's not forget the red dye and Oil of Wintergreen.

The older I get, the less I believe in magic ingredients and the more I believe in plain old chemistry.

I've been using this stuff for a few years. Been working good. I'm almost out so I might have to try out MMO next.

I have always used anything that says it is air tool oil. Now I have cans of Marvel Air Tool Oil and Senco around. This way I won't make any mistakes.

I know that many people use Marvel Mystery Oil, which looks and smells the same as Marvel Air Tool Oil.
