Air Vents (low level)

Hi everyone. I've been a lurker here, but my recent house purchase is spurring me into posting action. Ha!

We have some 6 in. grates at the floor level that are mandatory for homes that have the hot water heater in the garage (ours does). My problem with these grates is that they let in all kinds of bugs, grass, and dirt. They are probably 6 in. by 8 in. Is there anything I can do to let fumes out but keep things from coming in?

Can you put window screening over the grates? That should still allow enough ventilation and will keep out the bugs.

Just get some fine mesh window screening and you can frame it in with wood on the inside .

I'd suggest window screen also, maybe splurge and get some aluminum window screen.
