Airbag light on...

my 2000 Altima. My question is will it deploy unexpectantly while driving? I've read conflicting answers, so I'm asking GJ.

I've also read/heard to fix it it's not a DIY job, a mechanic told me it's best to go to the dealer for this repair.

Lastly, can I just pull the fuses until I do get it fixed?

Thanks GJ,

It shouldn't deploy; however, the light indicates there's an issue with the SRS system. It would be wise to call the dealer FIRST before removing any fuses. Ask the Service Tech if the fuse should be removed before driving the vehicle there for an analysis.

Airbag lights are tricky, couple things you can check to give yourself just a little piece of mind in the mean time is some cars under the seats will have airbag cnnectors for the seating system, just make sure they are plugged in. I've seen quite a few come undone just from normal seat movement as well as the more likely case of someone kicked it while in the backseat.

I wouldn't reccommend pulling the fuses. I'd say go get it checked out ASAP!

Thanks for the responses fellas, I'm going to the dealer this afternoon to get it checked out.

I was going there anyway to pick up a distributor seal since the old one is leaking.

I once asked my former manager, a 20-year veteran of VW-Audi and among the highest trained in the UK, if an airbag will or won't deploy if there's a fault.

He told there's no straight answer, it could or it couldn't, and is impossible to say without putting it to the test. Best to take it to someone with the right knowledge and equipment to accurately diagnose and repair it. SRS systems aren't something to be working on by the untrain and/or ill-equipped.

(I often refer airbag issues to main dealers.)

Actually those are seat sensors (Is there a human seating here ?), but you are correct. If they come loose the light will come on.

When my airbag lights came on I also got a DTC stored. First time I had to change the Airbag Computer and the second time (different car) it was the clockspring that had a broken wire. My shop manuals told me based on the DTC is the airbag would deploy or not.

Audi-VW are terrible with wiring. Especially the air bag sensors in the seats.

Many times they are connectors for air bags themselves in the side of the seat. Never seen one deploy but they're on the door side of the seat near your shoulder. A lot of problems with connectors under driver's seat, and they don't need a seat sensor for the driver's seat...right?

Not to hijack this thread, but what would people here suggest for a general SRS scanner? My scan tool (an Actron) has some generic SRS scanning capabilities, but a lot of codes it won't pull.

Thanks,
Techniker
