We are in the final phase of buying a house. Woohoo! I need to paint the interior, every single wall and all the ceilings, including the garage. I also need to stain the deck and the wooden fence.
I was thinking of getting an airless paint sprayer to get this stuff done. Has anyone had any experience with the paint sprayers? I was seriously looking at the Graco Magnum LTS15. I have never used one before and am wondering if it would be easier and quicker than using rollers and brushes.
I am somewhat pressed for time once we close on this house, but want to do a thorough, professional paint job. Thanks in advance for the comments!! :eyecrazy:

For a 1 shot deal, easier to rent one. Be forewarned, prep time on a spray job is often more than the actual spray job. Unless you're good with a spray shield, you're going to be doing a lot of cutting in with a brush anyway.

I disagree easier to rent. For your purposes I would most certainly purchase a unit. You've got a lot of days of work in front of you, no sense in rushing it.

From a high level perspective, a cheaper paint sprayer is great for laying the paint on the wall. It covers quickly. What most people do is "back roll" with a paint roller to get the typical texture of a rolled on paint job. This increases the quality of the work and evens out the coverage, so even if you're not a pro, it will still look good.

As you know, just getting the paint on the wall takes up 95% of the time. Rolling it afterward takes about two seconds. I painted a 20x23 garage, including ceiling, in 45 mins...

I would however recommend a Titan 100 from Home Depot. I was able to purchase it on sale and used it for my garage.

The nice thing about it, is the tip is dual sided, so you get two tips in one. One is a larger widespread tip the other is a small 4-6" band or so.

I had good luck with it, never did try the roller. I got an outstanding deal on it and ended up selling it for more than I paid for it, used. I sold it for $160 on CL.

A cursory glance on CL will tell you what the used ones are going for. If you can purchase, use, and sell for less than you can rent I would do so - it will give you much more time to use it.

FWIW, I regret selling it. I had a larger paint job in my house and would've loved to use the power roller - I ended up purchasing a Wagner unit for $99 that was similar in operation but much cheaper made with no long term durability. I also want to re-spray our cabinets, and man, it would've really come in handy for that as well.

HF does offer one as well, and it would also be great for just laying the paint on the wall. As I said, you're going to want to backroll it any way.

When does HD tend to do their big annual paint sale? Usually they put a sprayer or two on sale at that time too. Seems like it's usually in the spring?

I got the $199 Ryobi for $99 and it's been great but it's since been discontinued, so that's zero help.

First off, you're not going to get a professional job because you're not well......a professional - no offense. Your best plan would be to get a reference from a paint supplier (not a big box store) and tell them about your budget, your willingness to help and hopefully they can find you a painter that will fit your needs. There's much more to painting your investment than buying a sprayer and experimenting with it.

I have the Graco Magnum XL series sprayer, used it on the entire interior of the house when we moved in, was a huge time saver. There're a few gotchas with using a sprayer, but no reason why first timer can't do a good job with prep. The paint may need to be thinned depending on the tip and paint. Make sure to spray at an even pace, each room took on average about 5 min to spray. Be careful with the rigid hose, they can whip the gun in your hand and affect the pattern as you criss cross the rooms. Also, in tight quarters, you may want to use a roller due to lack of manuverability.

Well, their regular sprayer sale appears to be now:

Dunno if that mobile link will work for all, but it's probably just featured at their main page (today only)
